Organ donation becomes meaningful in Tamil films

Dhanush

The concept of organ donation has been used in Tamil films earlier, mainly in romantic films, as a crutch to further the plot (think Thullatha Manamum Thullum and Nee Varuvaai Ena). However, in recent times, films have started dealing with this subject in a mature way. If Chennaieyil Oru Naal (CON), based on a real-life story, was centred around the efforts to transport a heart for transplantation from Chennai to Vellore, Vellaiilla Pattadhari (VIP) shows how an act of organ donation makes the protagonist come to terms with his grief.

The director of VIP, R Velraj, says it was a conscious decision to include this angle in the script. "We wanted the movie to have some social messages but decided to do it subtly. That is why we had a sub-plot about donating one's organs," he says and adds that social messages in films definitely create an impact in the audiences' minds.
He feels that through organ donation, it is possible for people who have lost their loved one to overcome their grief and move on with their lives.

After watching CON, a remake of the Malayalam film Traffic, Rajinikanth commended the team for "making a responsible film on the importance of organ donation" and said, "We don't realize the importance of our body parts after death. Instead of wasting these parts, if we choose to donate them, then it might very likely save a life."
